The Vampire in the Neighborhood: Halloween Fiction

Featured in this post, The Vampire in the Neighborhood: Halloween Fiction, is a fictional Halloween tale, loosely based on non-fictional experiences.

Delilah Daff was always aware of the vampire in the neighborhood rumors. However, she never gave them much thought as she jogged by the suspected vampire's home each morning & sometimes, later that night.

Of course, rumors are rumors. There were plenty of weird neighbors, & odd stories, but the vampire that lived three doors down seemed a little out there.  The story went like this, one day, old man Sulivan was out getting his mail. He had a large bandaid covering a spot on his neck.

The neighbor across the street greeted old man Sulivan, inquiring about the covering figuring it was some sort of medical procedure or painful experience at the dermatologist.

However, when asked, old man Sulivan was direct, & deadpan in his delivery. "A vampire bit me."

Not knowing if he was serious or joking, the neighbor across the way, choked out a laugh & bid him good day. That is the way rumors happen...one gossipy neighbor.

Jogging past old man Sulivan's home, Delilah could see why the vampire story still lingered through the neighborhood's streets. Sulivan's grass wasn't as lush & green as the neighbor's to the left. Nor was his flowers as lovely as the folks to his right. No matter the season, there seemed to be a thin layer of mold that clung to the house. Then there was the street lamp. The one at his driveway's end was always flickering. On. Off. On. Off.

On occasion, passing by, Delilah noticed that the air surrounding old man Sulivan's home was different. It was almost in an atmosphere of its own--colder, darker, & a slight mildew smell. Somedays, a hint of bleach would waft up the front yard, & down the driveway.

One morning, the fog was lingering. Delilah was passing old man Sulivan's home. She noticed his dark truck was parked catty-corner with the lights on. Instinctively, she clutched her wood walking club a little harder. There was a thud, a hand around her neck, & a feeling of losing consciousness due to the force of being struck from behind.

Delilah couldn't have been out for long. Coming to, the familiar yet odd scent of {what she thought smelt like} mildew & bleach brought her to her barrings. Sleepily opening her eyes, she noticed her wood walking club was across the room, no longer in her grasp. Her hands were tied, & blood trickled down her bottom lip--a result of biting it with the blunt force hit from the back.

From what she could tell, she was inside a large garage, a garage meant for an antique car collector or to store a really big boat. There wasn't anything inside the large garage like that. In the back, there was a wood chipper, half covered. Next to the chipper, there was a wall of shelving. Part of the shelving was full of clear glass labeled vials. The other shelves were bare.

Inching her sore body closer to the shelving unit, the vials were clearly blood. The labels didn't depict the blood type but the type of body they came from. "Vial No. 81, Female, Blond, 5'4" "Vial No. 82, Female, Brunett, 5'7", "Vial No. 83, Female, Brunette, 5'2." The inventory went on for a few more rows.

Looking from the shelves to her abductor, old man Sulivan, his shape, & appearance shifted from what she had seen {on occasion}from the street, jogging by.

His height wasn't any taller, he was still rather stout. His gray hair slicked back, not a hair was out of place. His skin glowed like milk glass. There wasn't a freckle, vein, or pore to be seen. His eyes on the other hand told a different story. A story of someone sick, desperate, & hungry. They were yellow & slightly slit. If Delilah didn't think she was dealing with something other-worldly, she'd guess he was jaundiced.

Old Man Sulivan's teeth told Delilah what she was in for. With a slight curve of his lip, his teeth appeared--iridescently white, pointed at the incisors. However, regardless of how bright his teeth were against his milk glass skin, they had a slight red tint.

Quickly, she knew there was no red tint, but rather his teeth were blood-stained. Oddly, there wasn't any conversation before his next strike. Only, old man Sulivan spoke, "I have been watching you." "You walk past my home. Everyday." "You walk alone."

He looked at her up & down almost salivating from his lips. His pupils retracted further. Knowing her fate was to replenish the empty shelves of women's vials of blood, she ducked as Sulivan lunged forward. Her body launched under his, as he went airborne over top. Delilah rolled closer to her walking club, hands still bound.

Sulivan lunged again, she kicked, hard, & his body fell back. A corner of the shelves was sharp, rubbing the rope vigorously she was able to slip one hand free. Quickly, grabbing her walking club, she darted toward the door. The same unexplainable blunt force grabbed her from behind & her body flew against a wood chipper, parked near the garage's back door. The force sent her club to the floor, splintering in half.

With her raw wrist, she reached for the splintered club, sharp end facing outward. Old man Sulivan lunged again, a wild look on his face. With the flick of her arm, his lunge met the end of her splintered walking club.

The wild look in his eye disintegrated as did his body. Nothing was left on the cement floor, except a pair of fangs.

Breathing heavily, Delilah dropped the club & picked up the fangs. She walked over to the wood chipper & turned it on.
