Tips to Transforming Your Space Into the She-Shed You've Always Wanted

Tips to Transforming Your Space Into the She-Shed You've Always Wanted

She said, she'd like a she-shed, by the seashore. Or at least, that is what I said {say to this day}.

I think the idea of a she-shed is so dreamy & magical. A little shed, nestled amongst the trees meant just for you & the things you like to do. I love the idea of having a she-shed so much that a lot of my room decor is inspired by that.

I think the perfect concept of a she-shed is incorporating decor elements that best represent you as well as including pieces of nature in a whimsical fashion. Personally, my decor is a light touch of shabby chic meets seashore coastal chic as well as a touch of romantic bohemian charm.

This post, I interviewed a design expert at Laura Ashley,  Hope Gough - Laura Ashley's marketing manager to get the brand's tips on how to make your space feel like a she-shed, even if you have no shed!

1. What details can people incorporate into their space who yearn for that 'she shed' feel?

Laura Ashley

Women love the idea of escaping the daily grind and a she-shed is the perfect retreat to escape everyday life and indulge a hobby. There is no reason you can’t create that same she-shed feel indoors too. The secret is all in the details.

First, start with a place to lounge like a bed or a comfortable chair. A place to relax, craft, or read a book is a must. We love a neutral-color for the walls to provide a crisp, clean palette.  Add a chandelier for a soft elegant glow while giving the space some character. Incorporate color and texture with pillows and throws to create that cozy feeling of home away from home. Bring in a quilt to achieve that cottage charm.

2. For people who live a small space/one-bedroom home/apart, what are your tips to maximizing your area, but still keep that cozy home quality?

LA

Don’t let the fear of a small space stop you from creating a she-shed indoors. She-sheds are supposed to be small! Even if you live in a one-bedroom apartment, you can add a room divider to a cozy corner or look at rarely used spaces in a new way. With a few simple additions, even your entry, coat closet, or kitchen nook can offer you the same she-shed escape.

We love a wallpaper accent wall to create that cozy feeling and give the area dimension. If you can’t wallpaper as a renter, try framing a large piece or sections of wallpaper offer a similar look. Or use our removable wallpaper from Urban Outfitters.

Designating a small shelf or wall cabinet for a collection of treasures lets you express your personality without taking up valuable floor space. Add a hint of green with a small succulent or a hanging plant to bring natural beauty and freshness to the area. Make it charming with a cushion and throw and a soft rug to make the space comfortable and inviting.

3. This spring & summer, what colors {as well as patterns} has Laura Ashley adopted as inspiration? Can you give examples?

LA

Laura Ashely collections evoke calming colors and graceful florals that will make you feel rejuvenated and inspired. Blue is always a favorite among Laura Ashley customers but also a top home decor trend after Pantone named Classic Blue it’s Color of the Year. Other top trending colors for warmer months include pink, dove gray, and a gorgeous pale duck egg.

Colorful oversized florals are also blooming as a must-have statement in home decor. Our new bold peonies print provides a balance of elegance and beauty.

This summer, there is a new animal in town. The crane is swooping in and dominating the latest animal trends. The elegant flight of the crane gives that weekend getaway feeling within the comfort of your own home.

4. In your opinion what are three design elements that every she-shed inspired space has?

LA

There are three essential design elements that every she-shed inspired space has: a light and airy color palette, a comfortable place to sit, and decor to personalize the space.

The best she-shed boast a simple color palette to set the tone, make it feel larger and less cluttered. Use no more than three colors. Choose one color for the walls, and bring two other colors with textiles and decorative accessories.

Every she-shed needs comfortable seating, whether it’s a chair, small sofa, or day bed to provide a space to unwind.

Also, featured in this post is a beautiful {& reversible} lilac quilt called Keighley Lialic Quilt. Since the lilac hues in my quilt match the walls perfectly, I like to use creamy whites and light celery greens as my accent colors. I incorporate nature into my summer decor through seasonal flowers as well as seashells from my beach travels.
